Google MapsI visited the Cumberland City Council Service Centre in Merrylands to have some documents certified by a Justice of the Peace for a consulate application that required an overseas-issued civil document. I brought a government-issued copy of my birth certificate, which is the only official format currently available from the issuing authority overseas. I also provided the original receipt and a printed copy of the consulate's requirements confirming that this document is what they accept. The JP (Ameen) refused to certify the copy, stating it wasn’t an "original". I explained the situation, but he didn’t seem open to understanding the context. He briefly asked a colleague, then told me he wasn’t comfortable and suggested I find someone else. I understand that JPs have to act within their discretion, but the way it was handled felt dismissive. When people are dealing with international documents, not everything will look familiar. A little patience and willingness to ask clarifying questions would make a big difference, especially in a diverse community like ours. Sharing this in the hope it encourages a more thoughtful approach in future.
